Endless meadowlands and magnificent lakes set against arrays of mountain peeks as high as 10,000 feet covered with ice patches. Indigenous animals like grizzly bears, bighorn ships, and golden eagles populate this alpine region. For 100 years, the Glacier National Park in northern Montana has preserved some of North America wildest and rugged country with more than 700 miles of trails through remote wilderness.

Northern California

Early 2011 our family took a trip to the Bay Area. First stop is the Swiss Consulate in downtown San Francisco to apply passport for the two boys. The Swiss woman officer was friendly and fun to work with. Next day was a rainy so we went to the Museum of Natural Sciences. The exhibition was great, except the bio-sphere was closed for repair, bummer!  And next we went to visit Mirium and her family in San Jose. They live in a beautiful house and were very courteous to have us stay over night. Gotta check out some good Vietnamese food in San Jose’s downtown area.

Next stop we drove to Napa and stayed for a couple days. There are lots of big name wineries in this area, and most charge a hefty fee for some wine sipping. There are better options for wine tasting in other nearby towns. More on this later. There were serious wine tasters, and there were those who came just to party out and ride the VIP limos.

The highlight of the trip was driving up to Tahoe and have some fun with the snow as you can see in the video clips below. It’s best to drive to Tahoe during a the week and avoid the weekends. There was a long line of cars getting out of the mountain area as we were driving up late Sunday afternoon. I wanted to go snowboarding but it’s not fun to leave the kids and Julia behind and do it alone. So we ended up doing lots of tubing, still great fun. We also took an excursion driving further out to Reno for a walk around town and had some yummy buffet.

On the way back to SF, we veered to Sonoma and stayed for a couple nights. Healdburg was a great find just north of Sonoma. Wine tasting is a much better experience north of Sonoma as there are less people and fees are much more reasonable. There are just so many good wineries here. Grab a bottle of wine with some takeout food, and you’ll have a nice picnic with a view! Cheers.
